Julio Comendador, the mayoral candidate for Toledo, has drawn attention to the high levels of pollution in the Tagus River, accusing the Toledo municipal government of failing to implement adequate treatment facilities and allowing domestic wastewater discharge at various points along the river. He has advocated for the installation of mini-treatment plants to address the issue. Comendador’s diagnosis is supported by data recorded by the Saica network meters of the Ministry of Ecological Transition. Toledo Verde’s José Luis Serrano has joined Comendador in calling for mini-treatment plants and for a plan to reuse water for irrigation or washing the historic district, which is currently done using potable water. Serrano also pointed out the lack of foresight displayed by the Toledo municipal government in dealing with the chemical and organic discharges produced not only by domestic wastewater but also by the University Hospital. The plan for pollution control and water treatment will offer the river and its valley a much-needed solution.
